Again it was a week of Ewok shenanigans, the Sixth Doctor and a movie. Trust me, things get more interesting soon and I look forward to writing about something different.
The movie this week was Don Bluth's An American Tail. Somehow I had never seen this film before. I knew the song "Somewhere Out There", I think I may even have sung it in a high school talent show, but the movie itself escaped me.
I'm sure there are lots of folks who love this film, but I just couldn't get into it. Feivel and the other mice are cute, the animation is decent and the voice acting is good, but the story didn't really grab me. It felt derivative of other stories, and very much in the Fiddler on the Roof vein. If this was the VHS that you wore out as a kid, I get it. But it just wasn't for me.
I do want to talk about Doctor Who this week. We are coming to the end of Colin Baker's run and it seems like he has finally started to become likeable. I have to credit Bonnie Langford as Melanie, and the way the writers have built the relationship between her and the Doctor. Unlike Peri, the Doctor seems to really trust Mel. They are more like partners than the teacher-student relationship the Doctor had with Peri. It really is too bad that there are only 2 more episodes with Colin Baker. I was really growing to enjoy his performance and I'll be sad to see him go.
